A DANDY IDEA —Charlie Meyers

“It also works, as I found, for skiers without such problems... The spring system presses the ski on the snow for better control, particularly in longer–radius turns at higher speeds with less chatter. Edge changes come more quickly, and there’s an overall feeling of better posture and all–around stability.”

NO PAIN, BIG GAINL. Dana Gatlin

“After hours of skiing, my knees didn’t hurt. At night there was less swelling, and the next day I felt like skiing instead of heading for the hot tub. And yes, I think I was skiing faster, probably more efficiently.”

TAKE THE WEIGHT OFF—Bill Grout

“Skiers who could previously manage only a couple of runs a day are amazed to find themselves able to ski all day without pain.”

STRUT YOUR STUFF—Nicholas Howe

“...I expected to pull up after five turns, pant, and wait for the fire in my thighs to go out. Instead, I made nonstop turns all the way down..."

PRIDE GOETH —Carol Lawson

“Dr. Richard Steadman, the orthopedic surgeon in Vail known for rebuilding the limbs of famous athletes, has been recommending CADS for some patients with knee problems... For Esther Kartiganer, the senior editor of “60 Minutes,” the trade–off was simple. ‘I have had knee surgery four times, and my knees used to hurt and swell when I skied,’ Ms. Kartiganer, 56, said. ‘My skiing days were numbered. With CADS, I can ski all day, every day.’ ”

CHARLIE’S TIP —Charlie Meyers

“If you’re a ski enthusiast with knee problems or if your legs tire easily, then a device called CADS could be just the thing. Devised by Vail resident Walter Dandy, it features a suspension system of fiberglass rods that alleviates pressure on the knees and lessens the demands on leg muscles. It gives a skier more power with less effort and doesn’t materially change the balance on the skis. The system really works.”

SKIING WITH CADS HAS MANY BENEFITS —Julia Carlson Rosenblatt

“My first reaction skiing with CADS was that my turns were supercharged. All I had to do was flex my knees and relax. The CADS’ springs propelled me into my extension and at the same time applied pressure to the skis. I was flying, skiing fast and in great control. I wondered, if I had worn them in the race the day before, whether I could have beaten the two women who finished ahead of me. Testing them on the varied terrain of Cannon Mountain, I’d try a run with CADS, then compare what happened on the same run without them. The day was cold, following rain, and I definitely had better edge control on ice with CADS.”

CADS SYSTEM HELPS SKIERS LESSEN FATIGUE —David Irons

“I immediately noticed an increase in stability, a more positive edge into the snow...I found myself carving easy turns with very little effort, and short turns were equally easy...It didn’t seem to matter what type of terrain we were on; CADS definitely increased edging power and reduced chatter...When we broke for lunch, I had yet to feel any thigh burn...By the end of the day I could easily agree that CADS did the things claimed by its inventor, Walter Dandy”

CADS —Nicholas Howe

“a device that, for many, has changed the sport of skiing forever...The effect is astounding...Everything I always wanted to do on skis but couldn’t, now I can...Skiers have always been bound by an uneasy alliance with gravity: its pull enslaves their body at the same time that it frees their spirit. The slavery is gone now, leaving only freedom. And that’s a very large return for the small price...”

$300 [sic] CURE FOR BAD KNEES —Doug Pfeiffer

“...takes a significant weight load off skiers’ legs and transfers it directly to the boots, resulting in less stress to the knees and leg muscles. CADS, Constant–force Articulated Dynamic Struts, have...won converts...and attracted interest at ski schools from Aspen to Alta...more smiles for less work...The sensation was especially delightful when I linked shapely turns in powder. Endurance also increased...more down–mountain time with the same energy expenditure.”

“WHAT IS THAT STUPID THING?” PUT IT ON AND BE A ROBOSKIER —Kim McHugh

“The device will make believers out of those ski vacationers who can’t make it to the gym on a regular basis for those ski fitness classes...While the system continues to be popular with skiers who suffer from knee injuries, diseases like multiple sclerosis and arthritis, and other physical challenges, a booming audience is the healthy skier.”

BORN–AGAIN SKIERS —Claudia Carbone

“I am including this remarkable piece of equipment in this chapter because it’s important for women with chronic knee pain, knee or leg injuries, or weak legs due to disease or illness. Women who have given up skiing or are thinking of giving it up for these reasons, should know about CADS. ...Even more exciting, CADS enhances ski performance and control because of the increased snow contact and edging power.”
